That finished Green Gable I posted the other day? Not really. When I first put it on that morning, the boy duly praised it, then mentioned that I've been tending to knit things a little short lately -- he thinks I overcompensate for my short-waistedness. I said, "So you think this is too short?" He quickly answered, "No, that one looks great, I just mean generally. But that one is fine." And what do you know, all day long I found myself tugging it down; I had decided by the end of the day that I was going to rip out the bottom and add an inch and a half. Unlike most times that I decide to alter something, I actually started on it right away, so the Green Gable is back on the needles (once I figured out what size I'd used!).
As I was picking up the stitches along the bottom, I started thinking about the lengths of the tops I've knit recently: in the last year or so, I count four that are too short, and three that are just right (plus one that's the right length but too big). So maybe he's got a point. Therefore, I want to do a good serious measuring, of all my measurements while I'm at it, not just length, and write it down someplace I won't lose it and will be able to refer to next time I'm choosing a size or adjusting a pattern. Would come in handy for sewing too. Maybe I'll put it on an index card to stash in my little bag of knitting tools so I always have it in with my current project...
Unrelated: This morning when I left the house I saw a deer standing in the driveway, not 20 feet from the hood of my car and right next to the hydrangeas. Then when I got in the car and checked the side mirror to back up, there was another one right behind me. One male, one female, both calm as could be and apparently unconcerned by my presence. I love living in the woods.
I always knit things too short. I ended my Green Gable three or four separate times before the length was okay, and it still could be longer. I feel your pain!

Good idea on the index card. I have a problem with making things too short, too!

I ripped out the bottom of my Green Gable at least 4 times until I got it right. I hate the tug.
